Basics of Drawing — A six-class course on Thursdays starting March 14, 6:30 pm to 9 pm, $139. Learn the fundamental steps and techniques needed to understand and create a drawing. No prior skill necessary. Learn through a guided exploration in the use of shapes, lines, shading, texture, and perspective as the elements and building blocks that make a drawing come to life. Those who wish to review basics or improve skills are welcome. More advanced techniques will be covered for experienced students. Students are required to purchase supplies. A list will be provided.

What’s Happening In Newtown For Boomers, Seniors, And Family Members — A one-class course on Wednesday, March 13, 5 pm to 6:15 pm, free. The course is designed for those who are curious about what is going on in Newtown concerning seniors, boomers, and people overall. Come to this free monthly event, sponsored by Newtown Continuing Education and Curt Symes, professional senior advisor and advocate, to hear about Newtown’s livable community initiative, progress of the new senior center and community centers (including pools), and other topics of interest to members of the community and their families. These seminars will feature relevant guest speakers, representing town functions, local organizations and related businesses, and current monthly activities.

Medicare Basics — A one-class course on Thursday, March 14, 6:30 pm to 8 pm, free. Designed for those approaching 65 and/or new to Medicare, this educational workshop will cover many aspects of this somewhat daunting and complex subject. A few of the topics included are Medicare part a, b, and d, benefits, costs, and various related Medicare solutions — “Medigap” plans (Medicare supplements), Medicare health plans, Medicare savings plans, extra help, discount drug cards, and how Medicare works with other health insurance. The goal of this class is to learn about Medicare and to reduce the cost of healthcare.

Adult Child CPR/AED — A one-class course on Thursday, March 14, 6 pm to 8:30 pm, $89. For those that want to learn what to do during emergencies and to know that they have the power to save someone’s life in cardiac, breathing, and medical situations. Positively Shocking LLC will teach skills and provide students with a two-year American Red Cross certification in CPR in an easy and fun environment. The course is designed so that lay persons will react with confidence in an emergency situation. In addition to the one-night CPR/AED class, students can also register for a one-night first aid class

Photography Bootcamp For Beginners — A one-class course on Saturday, March 16, 9:30 am to 11 am, $49. For students who have a digital camera that they have no idea how to use on any setting other than auto, this class will show how to shoot on manual mode to unleash the camera’s potential and artistic control. This action-packed workshop covers ISO, aperture (f-stop), shutter speed, and more. Participants should bring a DSLR camera to class with a fully charged battery and memory card. A Nikon D5200 camera will be provided for participants without a DSLR for each class session.

Boston Flower And Garden Show — A day-trip on Saturday, March 16, $89, departs from Cromwell, approximately 7:30 am. Newtown departure will be from the Cromwell, Conn., Park & Ride lot. Directions to the departure lot can be found online at ct.gov/dot/cwp/view.asp?q=259406, choose “Cromwell.” The Boston Flower and Garden show is about inspiring, educating, and motivating the region’s gardeners. Whether for curb appeal, backyard, kitchen, indoor, rooftop, or community gardens, this is where New England’s green lovers go to discover new ideas while having fun with family and friends. This year’s show theme is “the beauty of balance,” which is a key factor in design decisions, plant and material choices, and in cultivating the right size garden for lives and budgets. The group will explore the harmony we create within our gardens, vases, and living spaces. Colorful, life-sized gardens and vibrant, floral designs incorporate the newest design elements, examples of the popular and healthy food gardening trend, ideas for adopting sustainable gardening practices, and air-cleansing indoor plants. Included will be small-space gardens, homesteading hobbies, edibles-as-ornamentals, and family- and pet-friendly spaces for outdoor relaxation and entertaining. The group will have free time at Quincy Market for shopping and browsing. No discounts apply.
