YOUNG ADULT BOOK DISCUSSION: Liz Arneth will meet with young adults in grades 3-8 on Thursday, October 18, 4:30 to 5:30 pm, to discuss the novel Dave at Night. Gail Carson Levins, the author of Ella Enchanted, has written a fictionalized account of her own fatherâs experiences growing up in a Hebrew home for boys. The main character in the book, Dave, is torn between the rich night life of Harlem in its heyday and the friends he has in the orphanage. Multiple copies of the book are available at the childrenâs desk.
Adult Programs
OPEN MIC POETRY PERFORMANCES: Visit the libraryâs meeting room on Sunday, September 30, for open mic poetry performances. All high school students and adult writers are invited to perform original or favorite poems, and all ages are welcome to enjoy the readings.
NEW COMPUTER CLASSES: Dan Tannenbaum from The Newtown Computer Training Center is providing a free beginnerâs computer class on Saturday, October 6, from 9 am to noon, at the library. This hands-on class is for the true beginner who wants to learn about the keyboard keys, the control button, shortcuts and function keys, as well as mouse skills including the left mouse button, right mouse button, double click, drag and drop. There will also be information to help students get started on the Internet/World Wide Web and how to search for information. Class size is limited so early registration (call or visit the library) is being encouraged.
There will also be an Intermediate class on Saturday, October 13, from 9 am to noon. This class has a $10 fee and will cover advanced web information including downloading files and saving pictures, as well as an introduction to email, sending email, email addresses, sending attachments and receiving attachments. Call the library to reserve a spot.
NO BATTERIES REQUIRED: Jim Makowicki, a toy Sandy Hook maker and the author of Making Heirloom Toys, will speak about his latest projects on October 10 at 7:30 pm in the meeting room. He will also be exhibiting his work at the library for the month of October.
RUBBER STAMPING BASICS AND BEYOND: Come join the fun of this hands-on class where you will learn some fun techniques to introduce you to the wonderful world of rubber stamping. Jackie Bache of Southbury will be conducting the workshop on Thursday, October 11, at 7:30 pm. There is also a $3 supply fee and the class is limited to 15 students, so sign up early at the circulation desk or by calling the library. Everyone will go home with two or three finished products.
DAYTIME BOOK GROUP: Tom Brokawâs The Greatest Generation will be discussed in the Special Collections Room on the third floor from 1 to 2:30 pm on Monday, October 15.
PARTNERS IN CRIME: A MYSTERY BOOK DISCUSSION SERIES: This series explores the relationships of very different mystery solving couples. On October 26 the title will be Bitter Feast by S. J. Rozan will be discussed; and on October 30, Evil Angels Among Them by Kate Charles. All discussions will take place at 7:30 pm in the Special Collections Room. Some copies of the titles are available at the library. Please sign up at the circulation desk or by calling the library.
