BETHEL – By putting three runners in the top 25, the NHS girls’ cross country team took fourth place amongst a very competitive field at last week’s South-West Conference championship meet in Bethel.

The locals finished sixth a year ago.

Erin Kostecki, a member of the all-SWC team for the second-straight season, led the way for Newtown with an 11th place finish. The senior covered the 2.5-mile course in 17 minutes, 20 seconds. Angela Shannon, 17th overall, in 17:35, followed her. Tracy Ravetto, returning from a leg injury, took 22nd overall in 17:52.

Bethel’s Erin Dobson was the overall winner in 15:59, but it was the depth of Joel Barlow that helped it capture the team title with 37 points. Anne Tunderman (16:15), Shannon Kenefick (16:28) and Ashley St Pierre (16:30) finished second, third and fourth to seal the Falcon win.

Bethel (57 points) was second and New Milford (107 points) was third. Fourth-place Newtown (115 points) was followed by Lauralton Hall (116), Pomperaug (163), New Fairfield (211), Masuk (226), Brookfield (229), Weston (310), Notre Dame-Fairfield (347), Foran (356), Immaculate (363) and Bunnell (391).

“It was an uplifting day for us. People were very happy with what they did,” noted Coach Marsha Caine. “We knew what Joel Barlow and Bethel were capable of, but we figured we had a shot at New Milford and Lauralton Hall.”

The Green Wave just beat the Nighthawks by placing its first and second place runners just ahead of Newtown’s. However, thanks to solid performances from Sarah Macknight (32nd, 18:17) and Jen Russell (33rd, 18:20), Newtown beat Lauralton Hall by a point.

On Tuesday, Newtown captured the junior varsity title at Bethel as Laura Reed (18:20) and Caitlyn Sullivan (18:36) finished first and second, respectively. Their fine performances were further proof of the depth of this year’s squad. Incidentally, Newtown was presented with an apple pie from race organizer Mark Goodwin.

Newtown will compete in the CIAC Class L meet at 2 pm this Saturday at Wickham Park. Its top five runners will attempt to combine for a time of 89 minutes or less in order to qualify for the State Open.
