Beekeepers Group To Meet Nov. 27

WESTON — The Back Yard Beekeepers’ Association is hosting the presentation “Beekeepers in Mongolia and Siberia” by Bob Cole from North Carolina. Mr Cole will hold forth on his work and travels with charitable organizations to educate and assist beekeepers in remote areas of the world. The presentation will be held on Tuesday, November 27, at 7:30 pm, in the community room of Norfield Church and is open to the public.

Bob Cole is the owner of Pot O’Honey in Todd, N.C. His beekeeping operation of 800 colonies provides pollination services for the surrounding area. In addition, his bees are managed for honey production, including the much sought-after sourwood honey.

Mr Cole has been involved in beekeeping since the age of three and was taught the art of beekeeping by his two grandfathers. He has been an active member of Eastern Apiculture Society for many years and he became an EAS Master Beekeeper the first year that the society offered the exam in 1981. His experience includes 20 years as a beekeeping educator, as well as working as a beekeeping volunteer in many underdeveloped countries. The evening’s presentation will focus on his volunteer work with the Siberian Beekeepers Union.

The Back Yard Beekeepers’ Association is a Fairfield County-based club of hobbyist beekeepers. As one of the largest hobbyist beekeeping organizations in the US, it strives to educate its members and the public on the importance of honeybees to agriculture and how a hobbyist can easily keep bees. Their monthly meetings cover a wide range of beekeeping topics and are open to anyone interested in learning more about bees and beekeeping, in addition to its members.

Prior to the presentation, there will be a meeting at 6:30 pm in the Greene Room open to BYBA members and would-be members covering the basics of beekeeping appropriate to the season.
