This Wednesday the Newtown High School Music Department will inaugurate a new tradition by presenting the first NHS Composers’ Concert, according to music teacher Chris Lee.

The event will take place on April 23 at 7 pm in the high school cafetorium, and will feature student work from the school’s music theory and music technology programs.

Mr Lee said this week that all of the compositions that will be offered have been composed this school year, some in recent weeks. He also said a combination of electronic works and live acoustic works will be offered during the event. A newly assembled group called the New Music Ensemble will perform the live works, according to Mr Lee.

With projects ranging from classical-style chorales to electronic dance music, the concert will demonstrate the school’s composers’ abilities to merge technique and structure with personal expression, Mr Lee said.

“I’m thrilled,” said Mr Lee, “to be finally offering a public event for our student composers, who impress me every year with their craft and creativity.”

The course has been offered at NHS for ten years, Mr Lee said, adding that it is fitting to offer the first NHS Composers’ Concert at such a milestone.

About 27 composers will be represented during the one hour concert, according to Mr Lee. He also promised a variety of style with a lot of talent.

“It’s going to be a concert that showcases our music theory and musical technology programs,” Mr Lee said.

The concert will also be the first in a set of spring concerts scheduled for each school in the district.

Newtown High School freshman Grant Larson recently worked to compose electronic music in class.
