Washington Antiques Show To Be October 2 & 3

 WASHINGTON DEPOT — The Washington Antique Show will celebrate its 18th year with a gala opening night Friday, October 1,and will continue over the weekend on Saturday and Sunday, October 2-3.

This year’s show, a fundraiser for the Gunn Memorial Library & Museum, will take place at Bryan Memorial Town Hall, on Route 47 in Washington Depot.

Sandra Elizabeth Canning and J. Rodney Pleasants, the show’s co-chairmen, have sought to express their commitment to traditional American and Continental furniture and decorative arts, as well as providing a variety of periods and styles. They are assembling 22 dealers from as far away as Ontario, Canada, and Middleburg, Va., and as close as New Preston and Woodbury, Conn. Dealers will bring antiques dating from the 17th Century to the early 20th Century. 

There will be a $25 preshow walk-through conducted by dealer and designer Lou Marotta on Saturday at 9 am. Mr Marotta will point out what he considers to be the unusual and amusing.

 The walk-through will be followed by a lecture series at 11 am, and 1 and 3 pm, in the Wykeham Room at the library, 5 Wykeham Road at Route 47 (up the hill from the town hall, on Washington Green). This year’s lecturers are private art consultant Jill Capobianco, who will discuss “Private Pleasures, Public Profit: How did we get such good art in Connecticut?”; Tom Savage, director, Sotheby’s Institute of Art, on “Great Houses and Collections of Charleston, South Carolina”; and Chris Giftos, former floral master, Metropolitan Museum of Art, will speak about the art of floral arrangements. Lectures are $25 each.

The October 1 preview party will be from 6:30 to 9 pm; tickets are $100.

The show hours are 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday, and 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday. General admission is $10 and includes entry for both days of the show. For information or reservations contact the library at 860-868-7586.
