MODERN ART AND DESIGN BRING SOLID SALES AT TREADWAY TOOMEY w/4 cuts

avv/gs set 12/12 #722337

OAK PARK, ILL. — The weather outside may have been frightful but selection at the Treadway-Toomey Gallery Twentieth Century Art and Design auction was delightful at the three-session auction on December 2 at the John Toomey Gallery.

The sale of a fine Tiffany Studios Lily lamp was one of the many fine Tiffany pieces offered in the auction. The 12-light lamp with a bronze base of sculpted lily pads sold comfortably above the $35/45,000 estimate for $60,000. Don Treadway admits that was rare to find this original Tiffany design in such wonderful condition. Perhaps one of the most spectacular Tiffany pieces featured, however, was the leaded and painted glass window “Recreation and Music.” Designed by Frederick Wilson, the two-paneled window was the top lot in the auction when it attained $144,000.

As a leader in the sale of Arts and Crafts decorative arts and furniture, it is not surprising that some of the gallery’s strongest sales were in its first session of early Twentieth Century design. A Rookwood vellum plaque by Carl Schmidt showed a detailed river landscape that sold well above the $8/10,000 estimate for $20,400.

A rare Daum lamp was widely sought after by bidders. The bronze Majorelle base supported a well-crafted opalescent shade with cameo cut dragonflies, fetching $19,200.

The session featuring American and European paintings also boasted solid sales. Among the vast selection of fine art paintings, a dramatic Clement Pujol de Gustavino oil on canvas, “Pleading Her Case,” sold for $108,000, well above the $15/20,000 estimate.

Two Pablo Picasso pieces attracted a lot of attention. A Picasso ceramic handled vessel, “La Femme Du Barbu,” went for $21,600, while a Picasso lithograph, “Francoise au Soleil,” sold for $27,600.

All prices reported include the 20 percent buyer’s premium.

The next Treadway-Toomey Galleries’ Twentieth Century Art & Design Auction is set for March 2 at The John Toomey Gallery, 818 North Boulevard.
