Her Passions

Shirley Ellen Toothaker Smith, 71, of Woodbury, died March, at her home, surrounded by her devoted family. She was born in Portland, Maine, June 12, 1939, the daughter of Dorothy and Wilbur Toothaker. She grew up on the islands of Maine in the Brunswick area.

She was married to Michael N. Smith for 25 years. They raised their four children in Newtown. Ms Smith was an active member of the Newtown community. Her greatest commitment was to the American Field Service, where she served as the regional vice president.

 Later in life she moved to Woodbury, and spent her time traveling and enjoying friends and family. She remained active with the Woodbury Garden and Women’s Clubs.

Ms Smith leaves behind her partner of 21 years, Joe Ruseski, four children, Brooke, Gretchen, Nathaniel, and Evan; and ten grandchildren.

Friends and family are invited to a celebration of her life April 3, at the Heritage Hotel in Southbury, at noon, with a luncheon following the service.
