Future, past, and present come together on the back fields at Newtown High School for Coach Matt Memoli’s youth baseball camps each summer. Up-and-coming ball players — this past week — worked on fielding, throwing, pitching, and hitting skills and got pointers from Memoli and some of his former and current players during the Youth Baseball Academy and Middle School Academy.

During part of the camp, the players are divided into teams and scrimmage, while Memoli announces each batter and names of participants who make plays in the field.

“It’s been awesome to watch,” said Memoli, impressed with how skilled many of the players are even before he helps them hone their approaches at the plate, on the mound, and in the field. During one of the player’s at bats, he was reminded by a teammate to not bunt with two strikes.

“They know the game; they play it well — it’s really great,” said Newtown High pitcher Andrew Ross, who will be a senior this coming fall, and helps coach at the camp.

Memoli notes that his players contact him looking to help out with the program each June and July.

“They like doing it, it’s fun — it’s a good time for everybody,” Memoli said.

Charlie Huegi, who completed his high school career at Newtown this spring, has coached in the summer program since eighth grade; and he’s been a part if it since about the age of eight. Huegi was one of Memoli’s campers and has gone on to help his coach work with young athletes.

“I always love it. This is my favorite week of every summer,” said Huegi, who was recruited to play ball in college and will attend the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

Another session is offered July 6–10 from 9 am to noon. The Youth Baseball Academy is for players ages 6–11; and the Middle School Academy is designed for middle school players ages 12–14.
