Nighthawk Swimmers And Divers Compete In States

Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming and diving team participated in the Class LL state championships at Wesleyan University on March 17. The Nighthawks scored 137 points and placed 14th among 21 teams to score in the meet. Greenwich, with 836, was the winner. The Nighthawks had some strong performances.

The 200 yard medley relay team, which included Tommy Horan, Seth Barrett, Matt Argraves, and Owen Gray, placed 13th in a time of 1:44.82 to score 28 points.  In the 50 freestyle, Gray was 14th in 22.98 to earn 13 points.

Kyle Gaynor was 16th in the diving competition, with a score of 287.30 for 11 points. Fellow freshman Andrew Lally also competed in the diving event.

Peter Fagerholm came in 22nd in the 500 freestyle race, making his final touch in a time of 5:10.94 for three points.

The 200 yard free relay team of Layton Harrell, Argraves, Barrett, and Gray placed 11th in a time of 1:35.69, good for 32 more points.

In the 100 backstroke event, South-West Conference champion Tommy Horan was fourth best among LL rivals. He finished the race in 46.04 to score 25 points.

Barrett came in 18th in the 100 yard breaststroke event, finishing in 1:05.41 to pick up seven points for his team.

Newtown’s 400 free relay group of Curtis Giles, Gray, Harrell, and Horan was 17th in a time of 3:32.29, for 18 points.

The season concludes in the March 21 State Open, at Yale University in New Haven. The event brings together the top swimmers from every school in each of Connecticut’s class sizes: LL, L, M, and S.

Tommy Horan, swimming to a first-place finish in backstroke race during the South-West Conference championship on March 6, went on to place fourth in the event at the Class LL finals, at Wesleyan University in Middletown on March 17.
