Children’s Programs

*Summer reading officially begins on June 26 with two special magic shows by Magician Debbie O’Carroll at 11 am and 1 pm. Free tickets for both performances will be available at the children’s circulation desk at 9:30 am on June 26. The Friends of the Library will also hold a children’s book sale from 9:30 am to 5 pm.

*Check the calendar on our website for upcoming summer programs, including an author visit from Bruce Degen, storytelling by Marty Bishop, various art and science workshops, live animal programs, and a Book Buddy program for independent readers

 

YA Programs

*“Cool Drinks & Cool Stories” on Monday, June 25, from 2 to 4 pm, is the kickoff for the Teen Summer Reading Challenge for students entering grades 6–12. Relax, beat the heat with a fruit smoothie, then settle back and listen to acclaimed storyteller Jackson Gillman, “The Stand-Up Chameleon.” Full details, prizes and how to participate will be discussed. *Make a beaded anklet or bracelet that glows in the dark with artist Pat Martin on Wednesday, June 27, from 3 to 4:30 pm, for rising grades 6–12. Class is limited to 15; $3 supply fee payable at program. Sign up online.

*Creative Writing Summer Camp for young people who love to write welcomes back author Sarah Darer Littman. Students entering grades 6–7 will meet from 3:30 to 5:30 pm and students entering grades 8–9, from 6 to 8 pm, on five Thursdays from June 28 to July 26. Students are expected to attend all five class sessions and all sessions allow time for writing and sharing stories, which is an important part of all writing groups. Each group is limited to ten participants. Sign up online.

*Knit & Crochet Club For Teens in rising grades 6–12 will meet on Mondays, July 2, 9, 16, and 23, from 4 to 5:30 pm. Come to one or come to all. Longtime instructor Maggie Flynn will work with you to complete a simple project. She teaches knitting and single, double and triple crochet. All ability levels are welcome. There is a one-time materials fee of $8. Sign up online.

*Henna Body Art Workshop for young adults entering grades 6–12 will be available on Saturday, July 7, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. Newtown resident Parul Patel will demonstrate the art of Mehndi all-natural henna temporary tattoos. Practice using templates and natural henna cones to make simple traditional designs. Each participant will receive a small hand tattoo from Parul. There is a materials fee of $5, payable at the program. Sign up online.

Programs For Adults

*Good Reads for Hot Days: This lecture series of good books with Julie Stern, a retired English and philosophy teacher from Western Connecticut State University, is on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm in the Antiques Room. The books include The Soloist by Mark Salzman, June 27; Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler, July 11; and Hemingway’s Short Stories on July 21.

*Mary Thomas has helped put together a small but distinguished group of wedding dresses from the 1930s to the 1980s from Newtown families that is on exhibit in the dining room on the third floor through July 2.
