A Word Of Caution

To the Editor:

I would like to issue a word of caution for everyone living in the wooded areas of Newtown/Sandy Hook to be aware of the dangers and to keep a close eye on their pets and children. Both of my Shetland sheepdogs (small collies) have been bitten by fairly large animals, probably coyotes, in the past few weeks. They are incredibly lucky to have gotten away after the animal managed to grab hold and get a taste of them. As my dogs have very thick fur, the wounds were not immediately noticeable, but they were quite severe.

I highly recommend that, along with not letting pets wander off too far out of sight, owners also routinely check them for any hidden wounds, because these can worsen quickly and be difficult to heal — sometimes requiring surgery under anesthesia — risky healthwise, and very costly. I am not writing this to cause fear, but rather to emphasize that there are bigger animals than squirrels inhabiting Newtown’s woods, and we need to be cautious and practical in order to keep ourselves and those we love safe.

Sincerely,

Kayleigh Metviner
