The Newtown High School girls’ tennis team was slated to wrap up its regular season at Foran in Milford on Wednesday (after press time). From there, the tennis club was taking a few days off before gearing up for next week’s South-West Conference tournament at Wolfe Park in Monroe.

The 7-6 Nighthawks were looking to gain a little momentum with a win over Foran. They had slipped a bit over the past week with a pair of losses to Brookfield and Joel Barlow, two of the league’s more formidable teams.

On Monday, Newtown’s first doubles team of Caitlin Martin and Monica Alpert picked up Newtown’s only win, a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 decision over the 10-3 Falcons’ Monica Dandapani and Lauren Shea. The remaining six teams all lost in straight sets.

But coach Carol Lipnick and company head into next week’s SWC with fresh legs and an understanding that anything can happen, especially during a two-day tournament. Who knows, the scrappy Alexis Nahoum could still be out on the courts late Tuesday afternoon, seeking a title at second singles.

The SWC tourney begins Monday at 3:30 pm.
