*On the Road: A photographic essay of the cross country bike trip taken by Faith and Peter Vicinanza is on view until September 28. The exhibition is called “On The Road: A Photographic Essay by Faith & Peter Vicinanza,” and also contains gallery quality digital print images from the past 15 years by the couple as well as new work done during the past two years.

*Sculpture Exhibit: Debby Tendler has a one woman show of her sculptures, “Creative Expressions Through Stone Sculpture: A Woman’s Journey To The Self,” on the second floor of the library during normal library hours. The collection will remain on view until October 5.

Children’s Programs

*Music Program for Toddlers: Francine Wheeler, a professional singer and songwriter, will offer a music program for young children on Thursday, September 27, at 11 am, for ages 1-2, and at 11:30 for ages 2-3.

Francine has produced and recorded her own music CD titled Come Sit Beside Me. Copies of the CD will be available for purchase on the day of the program.  No registration is required. Join Francine and her guitar for a fun, musical experience.

*Make a Mummy for Halloween!

Katie Stevenson will lead a special workshop on Monday, October 29, from 3 to 5 pm, for 15 young people in grade 6 and up. Preference is given to Newtown students and residents.

These 12-inch plaster desktop mummies will be decorated with glow-in-the-dark paint for an awesome Halloween effect. A supply fee of $5 will be required from each participant. Also, bring an empty 1-liter plastic bottle and an old shirt.

Programs For Young Adults

*Creative Writing-Poetry Time: Calling young poets! The fall session of Creative Writing-Poetry is open.

This session is limited to ten Newtown students in grades 6-8 who like to write poetry and want to improve their style and have fun too. It meets for five Monday evenings (October 15, 22, 29, and November 5 and 19, with a November 26 makeup date available if necessary), from 6 to 8 pm each week. Note there is no meeting planned for November 12.

Liz Arneth, a retired English teacher, will lead the program again. Her volunteer assistant will be writer Donna Renzulli, who also worked with the summer creative writing camp.

There is no fee but you must sign up and commit to coming to all five sessions.  Call the library or sign up at the Main Floor Circulation Desk.

 Adult Programs

*Book Discussions: Upcoming book discussions will include the Nonfiction Book Group discussing The Big Bam: The Life and Times of Babe Ruth by Leigh Montville on Tuesday, October 2, at 1 pm; and the Daytime Book Group discussing Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner on Monday, October 15, at 7:30 pm.

*Searching For Shakespeare: A Shakespeare lecture series has kicked off this month September with a discussion of The Bard’s sonnets. Copies of the featured sonnets are available at the library to borrow or purchase ($4). Please ask at the circulation desk. 

The play to be discussed in September is Julius Caesar.

Upcoming events focusing on Julius Caesar will include a lecture led by Dr Mark Schenker, Associate Dean at Yale College, on Tuesday, September 25, at 7 pm; and a play discussion led by Newtown residents Joyce Goldin and Peg Jacques on Tuesday, September 27, at 7 pm.

The series will continue until March, with lectures and programs focusing on a different play each month. Stop by the library or visit us online to pick up a schedule.

*Relatively Romanovs: Dr Mona Garcia will be giving a presentation on the Romanovs focusing on Nicholas and Alexandra, the last tsar and tsarina of Russia. Come learn about the real life of the Romanovs, which proves to be more interesting than the theories put forward about their possible survival.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, October 4, at 7:30 pm.  Please call the library to reserve a place.

*Baseball Book Author Visit: Newtown author Dana Brand will be at the library on Thursday, October 11, at 7:30 pm, to discuss his new book on the Mets, called Mets Fan. This will be a great night for fans!

*Book Nook News: The War is coming to PBS and also to the Book Nook. Nonfiction and fiction books on World War II are still being featured this week.
