PHILADELPHIA, PENN. â The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Artsâ Art-at-Lunch talk on American art and culture on Wednesday, April 30, from noon to 1 pm, will cover âEugeen Van Mieghem and the Emigrants of the Red Star Line.â
At the turn of the last century, the port of Antwerp saw the emigration of thousands of Europeans to America, many of who sailed on the Red Star Line and landed in Philadelphia, New York and Boston. Artist Eugeen van Meighem (1875â1930) documented this exodus in drawings, pastels and paintings, focusing specifically on the gritty realities of the steerage passengers. Irwin Joos, president of the Eugeen Van Mieghem Museum in Belgium, tells the tale of this little known artist.
The academy is at 118-128 North Broad Street. For information, 215-972-7600 or www.pafa.edu.
