HISTORIC NEW ENGLAND TO PRESENT ARCHITECTURE CLASSES IN OCTOBER

BOSTON, MASS. â Historic New England presents âIntroduction to New England Architecture: Technology and Tradition,â on Tuesdays or Thursdays in October at 6:30. Tuesday sessions will be held at the Lyman Estate, 185 Lyman Street, Waltham, Mass., and Thursday sessions will be held at the Langdon House, 143 Pleasant Street, Portsmouth, N.H.
This five-week course tells the story of New England architecture from 1640 to 1940. Historic New England staff explore building traditions, available technology and how lifestyles affected the houses of generations of New Englanders.
Using high-style and vernacular examples from across New England, Senior Stewardship Manager Joseph Cornish and preservation specialist Sally Zimmerman trace changes in construction, style, and function in residential architecture in a series of lectures that culminates in a hands-on tour of a Historic New England property.
Tuesdays classes are: October 2, First Period and Early Georgian; October 9, Georgian and Federal; October 16, Greek Revival to Early Victorian; October 23, Late Victorian to Early Modern; and October 30, hands-on tour of Lyman Estate.
Thursday classes are: October 4, First Period and Early Georgian; October 11, Georgian and Federal; October 18, Greek Revival to Early Victorian; October 25, Late Victorian to Early Modern; and November 1, hands-on tour of Langdon House.
