Late May Audubon Events

Lillinonah Audubon Society, a local chapter of National Audubon Society, has three events planned for the last two weekends of the month, and all are open to the public.

The society will hold its annual birding breakfast on Saturday, May 24, at 9 am. This popular event will be held rain or shine in the barn at the Audubon Nature Center at the Bent of the River, 185 East Flat Hill Road in South Britain.

It will be preceded by an optional two-hour bird walk beginning at 7 am and followed by a longish and shorter nature walk after breakfast. The public is welcome at any or all parts of the program.

Space is limited at the breakfast so reservations must be made. The menu will include fresh fruit, pancakes, eggs, sausage, and other goodies and the price is $5. Call either Barbara Starr, 748-2599, or Martha Cushman, 798-0477, to reserve a spot.

Bring your own place setting in the interest of ecology. This is a perfect time of year to see birds and spring will be busting out all over. Participants can usually count on an enjoyable morning in one of the most beautiful settings in this part of Connecticut.

On Saturday, May 31, the society will be sponsoring two community events. From 10 am to 1 pm that day, environmental experts will meet in Newtown for a program about the town’s pristine wildlife habitat. Members of the Open Space Task Force will also talk about open space conservation.

The program will feature a bird walk at 10:30, botany study at 11:30, and exploration of a vernal pool at 12:30. The group will meet at the Pole Bridge Preserve on Pole Bridge Road (follow signs from Sandy Hook Center). For additional information call Sally O’Neil, 426-2607. Rain date is June 1.

Also on May 31, Friends of the Old Quarry Nature Center in Danbury have arranged for a special live bird program conducted by professional naturalists and bird rehabilitators from Sharon Audubon Center. The primary focus will be on local owls.

The event will be held at 1 pm at Old Quarry, a 40-acre gem behind Rogers Park. Call Barbara Starr, 426-2607, for details.
