First selectman hopeful Gary Fetzer and his running mate Joe Hemingway, who is seeking a Board of Selectmen seat come November, are both positioned for the full Democratic Partyâs endorsement.
The Candidates Committee of the Democratic Town Committee met on Wednesday, March 25, and voted unanimously to recommend Mr Fetzer and Mr Hemingway for endorsement for the respective offices. That endorsement is expected at the next to the Democratic Town Committee meeting, according to a release from the DTC.
The Democratic Town Committee regularly meets on the second Thursday of each month at 8 pm in the Alexandria Room at the Edmond Town Hall. All registered Democrats are welcome to attend.
Following the committee action, Mr Fetzer told The Newtown Bee he is proud and humbled that he and Mr Hemingway received the Candidates Committee recommendation.
âI consider it a continuation of my commitment to public service that first began 20 years ago when Jack Rosenthal asked me to be his running mate on the Board of Selectmen,â Mr Fetzer said. âGovernment does have a role to play in helping the residents of the town meet the challenges of this difficult economy, and I will continue to talk to them about their concerns, problems and potential solutions they might have.â
Mr Fetzer said his task is to âcreate a common vision and then develop a long-term strategic plan on how to achieve those goals.â
The first selectman candidate observed that âNewtown has wonderful and creative volunteers on its boards and commissions, and an important responsibility of the Board of Selectmen is providing them with the tools and coordination that will allow them to do their jobs more efficiently and effectively.âÂ
