GREENWICH ANTIQUES SOCIETY PLANS APRIL 7 TALK ON BAYOU BEND

avv/gs set 3/12 #731739

GREENWICH, CONN. — The Greenwich Antique Society will present a lecture, “The Collections at Bayou Bend” given by Michael Brown, curator, Bayou Bend, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Monday, April 7, at 1:15 pm, at The Bruce Museum.

Bayou Bend is the fine home of Ima Hogg (1882–1975), collector and philanthropist. Named for the bayou running through the property, the house was built in 1927–1928 for Hogg and her two brothers. Hogg was influential in designing the architecture of the house and created gardens designed as outdoor rooms for living and entertaining. Hogg donated her house and her collection to the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and it has been open to the public since 1966.

The collection of several thousand pieces is installed in 28 period room settings, a showcase of American decorative arts dating from 1620 to 1870. Included are silver, glass, ceramics and textiles; furniture of John Townsend and John Henry Belter; paintings by Copley and Charles Willson Peale; and silver by Paul Revere — illustrating the artistry of early America.

Brown, the curator of the Bayou Bend collection, will give a slide presentation on the collection. He is the author of America’s Treasures at Bayou Bend, and contributing author of American Decorative Arts and Paintings in the Bayou Bend Collection.

A tea will follow the lecture. For reservations, 203-809-9531 or 914-631-9439; admission for nonmembers is $15.
