A Shared Concern For Environment

To the Editor:

Proposed plans to make improvements to the site of the Catherine Violet Hubbard sanctuary will necessitate moving large amounts of fill and stone over the bridge at Deep Brook to access the sanctuary. The plans call for four tri-axel trucks, each making five trips per day, over a four month period.

Anyone having driven to this area past the dog park knows that the surface of the road is very poor, the asphalt having been worn away as one approaches the bridge as well as on the upgrade just beyond the bridge. This raises concerns about erosion and run-off, as the proposed truck traffic will undoubtedly further degrade the surfaces. Heavy fall or spring rains would make the situation even worse, putting Deep Brook, a Class One trout stream, at risk.

It is important that the Hubbard sanctuary and the town come to an agreement that recognizes the importance of Deep Brook and serves to prevent any degradation of water quality and the stream’s ability to support aquatic life. It seems obvious that any proposal should include management practices that control run-off and prevent siltation near the bridge and beyond.

Hopefully, the recent dialog about this project is only the beginning of continued shared information and understanding as the Hubbard sanctuary plans unfold. Surely the long-term goals of the Hubbard foundation and the goals of the town have much in common, protection of habitats for wildlife being one of them. The continued health of Deep Brook should be a high priority for both parties.
