LECTURE AND BOOKING SIGNING SALMAGUNDI SKETCH CLUB MACCULLOCH HALL

avv/gs set 4/12 #695823

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — Alexander Katlan, fine art conservator and member of the Salmagundi Sketch Club, will discuss and sign copies of his latest book, The Black and White Exhibitions of the Salmagundi Sketch Club 1878 to 1887, Sunday, April 29, at 1 pm, at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum. These New York exhibitions include such noted American artists as A.B. Frost, William M. Chase, Jasper Cropsey, John S. Sargent and James M. Whistler.

Three of A.B. Frost’s works are featured in the second floor hall of Macculloch Hall, and two upstairs galleries have exhibits of Nineteenth Century political cartoonist and artist Thomas Nast, who was a contemporary of the artists featured in the Salmagundi Sketch Club Exhibitions.

This is the first book to provide in-depth research into the history of the “Black and White Exhibitions,” which featured etchings, engravings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics and oils. Besides famous American male artists, the exhibitions also included the works of noted women artists of the time, such as Elisabeth H. Bartol, Mary Nimo Moran and M.R. Oakley, among others. A number of distinguished European artists also participated in the Salmagundi Sketch Club Exhibitions.

The 272-page hardcover book has numerous black and white illustrations and includes the actual titles and sales prices of the artworks. This exhibition directory includes a forward by curator Nancy W. Grinnell of the Newport Art Museum and a preface by art curator Eva Greguski. The book also includes a complete directory of the artists and artwork alphabetically arranged. The book will be available for purchase for $30 and Katlan will be available to sign the book. A portion of book sales will be donated to Macculloch Hall.

Macculloch Hall Historical Museum, 45 Macculloch Avenue. The lecture and book signing is open to the public with regular museum admission. For information, www.maccullochhall.org or 973-538-2404.
