Business Buzz: Berkshire Motors Revving Up Motorbike, Scooter Sales
Business name: Berkshire Motors
Address: 25 Berkshire Road, Sandy Hook
Owner: Jim Marcucilli
Background: I’ve been operating a full service vehicle repair center here across from Newtown High School since 1999. In the early days, I worked on customers’ vehicles along with other technicians, but since we started employing a shop foreman and four more technicians, I concentrate on other aspects of the business, including used vehicle sales. In July I decided to take on a line of Wolf Brand Scooters, and two lines of American-made motorcycles from Ohio’s Cleveland CycleWerks, and Janus Motocycles of Goshen, Ind.
Focus: Since we’re right across from the high school, I thought offering young local people and adults an economic alternative means of transportation was a good idea. And since a lot of our kids are away at college, these bikes and scooters are also great for getting around a college campus, or back and forth between an off campus residence and school. The Wolf Brand Scooters are all just below the state cutoff of 50cc motors, so they do not have to be registered. But they are still powerful enough for around town or for a student who is away at school, but may not have or need to keep a car. The motor bikes are larger engines, so they require a Connecticut registration to operate on the road. The Cleveland bikes come in a choice of 110cc or 250cc, are very simple mechanically, and can either be serviced by the owner or here at Berkshire Motors. They are mostly designed like the little Hondas and other small runabout motorbikes that were popular in the ‘60s and early ‘70s. The Janus bikes are more like 1920s-era replicas, and a few models come with 250cc and 299cc motors.
