Summer Camp Registration Has Opened
Summer Camp Registration Has Opened
Itâs time to start thinking about summer camp. This week as March surprised the region with several days of 50-degree weather, Assistant Director of Recreation RoseAnne Reggiano met with Tween and Teen Adventure Camp Directors Peggy MacIntire and Ray Irrera to talk about enrollment.
Registration for the summerâs weeks of camping and field trips is now open.
Depending on the week, the dates âfill up fast,â Ms Reggiano warned. Tween camps run from late June through the first week of August, and teen camps run from the last week of June and throughout July.
âItâs a fun summer,â Ms Reggiano promised. âItâs exciting for the kids. They can be with their friends.â
âThey do a lot of socializing,â Ms MacIntire added.
Ms MacIntireâs Tween Adventure Camp for students in grades 5 and 6 enjoys several trips each week. Students might go bowling or visit Lake Compounce. The younger students also may accompany the Teen Adventure Camp participants on a combination trip.
Outdoors and enjoying Mondayâs warmth and hint of weather to come, Ms Reggiano visited The Pleasance with the two directors. All three agreed that the adventure camps are âthe best summer deal in town.â The teen campers will go on daily field trips to play paintball, go kayaking, rock climbing, and visit the Brownstone Exploration & Discovery Park in Portland (Conn.).
Another destination is Ocean Beach in New London.
âItâs got a water park and arcade; you canât get bored because there is too much to do,â said Ms Reggiano.
For parentsâ peace of mind, the directors stressed that all camp counselors are over 19 years old, and many have returned for several years in a row.
Registration will remain open until camps are full. Visit Newtown-CT.gov, and look for the Parks and Recreation Department section for online signups, or contact Parks & Rec at 203-270-4340.
