Travel Team Wins Cal Ripken District
The Newtown 9A Travel Baseball, the Knight Hawks, won the Cal Ripken 9U District 5 championship by defeating Oxford 7-6 at home on July 10. With the victory, Newtown advances to the Cal Ripken 9U State Tournament.
It took nearly 24 hours to complete the game as it was originally scheduled for the night before. Heavy thundershowers forced the game to be suspended after 3 1/2 innings with the scored tied 3-3. After play resumed, Oxford scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead. In the home half of the inning, Trevor Barrett cleared the bases with a grand slam to center field, giving the Knight Hawks a 7-6 lead. Oxford was held scoreless in the final inning of play.
The Cal Ripken 9U Connecticut State Tournament is scheduled to begin on Saturday, July 19, in Meriden. Newtown will face the winner of the District 4 Tournament. The state champion advances to the regional tournament in Hudson, Mass on August 1.
