The Career Center At Newtown High School Lists Scholarships

The NHS Career Center has information about all scholarships of which it is notified. Details about some of the currently available scholarships are offered here, but students and parents should visit the Career Center for full requirement details and applications.

Among the scholarships available are the following:

Newtown Newcomers & Neighbors will award a $500 recognition scholarship to a graduating senior from Newtown High School who is a “newcomer” to the community and has made a positive impact on the school and/or community.

Applicants must have moved into Newtown and/or NHS during their junior or senior year of high school and have made a positive impact on the school or community. Deadline is April 15.

Connecticut Women’s Bowling Association — A $1,000 scholarship award will go to a graduating high school senior from Connecticut, male or female, whose mother or grandmother is a sanctioned member of the Connecticut Women’s Bowling Association.

Applications are due by March 15.

Nutmeg Statewide PTA Scholarship — The Connecticut PTA will award one scholarship for $1,250 and one for $250 to high school seniors who plan to attend a four-year college to pursue a career in service to children other than teaching. Previous career choices have included been pediatric plastic surgeon, attorney, and social worker.

Class rank, community/school service, and an essay will also be considered. NHS may nominate one student to apply for this scholarship. Applications must be returned to the Career Center by March 19.

Bruce Eagleson Memorial Scholarship Award — One $2,500 first place scholarship and ten $1,000 runner-up scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors from Connecticut high schools who are members of the Connecticut Association of Schools.

Applicants must be entering a higher education program leading to a degree in either visual or performing arts. Candidates should be highly accomplished in at least one branch of the arts as evidenced by involvement in shows, exhibits, performances, video productions, etc.

Candidates should also be involved in community service through their artistic or other activities. Financial need must be demonstrated.

Applications  submissions are due by March 16.

Gerald D. Roche Family Scholarship and Community Scholarship Group Scholarship — The Gerald D. Roche Foundation will award two scholarships, each in the amount of $1,500, to two graduating seniors from NHS.

Interested students should complete the one-page application about their community service, career plans and any extenuating circumstances, and submit it to the Career Center by April 3.

Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarships — This national scholarship program recognizes outstanding young people ages 6-18, for their volunteer activities in the community.

Each store location will recognize two winners with $50 gift certificates; 170 regional winners will receive $1,000 scholarships; ten national winners will receive $5,000 and a $1,000 grant to be given to charity of their choice.

Interested students must submit a nomination form from   KohlsCorporation.com.

Completed nominations must be returned to the Customer Service Desk at any Kohh’s store by March 15.
