Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Appointments can be made to review and/or sign up for PART D DRUG PLANS on Mondays between 10 am and noon. Call for an appointment, 270-4310.

*With the holidays upon us, join us in making CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS on Tuesday mornings at 10 am.

*Senior Center will be closed a half-day on Wednesday, December 24, and all day Thursday, December 25, in observance of Christmas.

 

Upcoming Programs

*Enjoy an overnight at MOHEGAN SUN GETAWAY from January 27 to 28. Prices include hotel accommodations, $10 food coupon or one buffet, and $30 fee bet. Cost is $169 single; $109 double; $104 triple; depart at 8 am. Sign up today.

 

Day Trips

Tickets are still available for the following day trip.

*Ace in the Hole presents BIG BAND NEW YEAR’S BASH on Tuesday, December 30, in North Haledon, N.J. A New Year’s Eve party in the afternoon with lunch, favors, balloons, champagne toast, daylong dancing, and comedian Danny Curtis. Depart at 8:45 am; $94 per person.

 

Recurring Activities

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM knitting, cards.

December 22–26

Monday: Hanukkah: Pot roast with gravy, potato latkes with applesauce, diced carrots, seedless rye bread, jelly donuts.

Tuesday: Chicken cacciatore with penne, broccoli florets, Italian bread, grape juice, oatmeal raisin cookie.

Wednesday: Holiday Special: Beef Wellington with gravy, twice baked potato, vegetable medley, wheat dinner roll, strawberry holiday cake.

Thursday: Christmas Day: Closed

And for planning ahead—

Monday: December 29: Oven fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, garden peas, buttermilk biscuit, seasonal fresh fruit.

Tuesday: December 30: Beef barley soup with crackers, cold cut grinder with ham, salami and cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise, coleslaw vinaigrette, Bartlett pears.
