BEDFORD, New York â The 23rd annual Pegasus Horse Show will be held Sunday, May 16, from 10 am to 3 pm, at Coker Farm on Stone Hill Road, Route 137, in Bedford, New York.
Pegasus Therapeutic Riding was founded in 1975 at the Ox Ridge Hunt Club in Darien, Connecticut by a group of volunteers who believed in the therapeutic power of horseback riding. Beginning with eight physically disabled students, they were determined to bring the benefits and joys of horseback riding to the disabled of their community. Today, Pegasus has become one of the largest and most highly regarded therapeutic riding programs in the United States, servicing some 200 students each year in programs at nine locations throughout Fairfield County, Connecticut and Westchester County, New York.
Professional physical therapists and instructors provide riding therapy to students with such physical and mental disabilities as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, spina bifida, blindness, and Down syndrome, as well as learning and other developmental challenges. Students range in age from three to seventy-three. Supporting this work is a large group of dedicated volunteers. Some work as âsidewalkersâ for students who need assistance. Others are trained as horse leaders and to assist in âtacking upâ the horses for the dayâs lessons. The reward for performing these vital services is the special friendships that develop with the riders.
Pegasus is seeking people willing to sponsor a ribbon for the show â the Grand Champion ($5,000), Champion ($1,000), Reserve Champion ($500), Blue ($250), Red ($150), Yellow ($100) or White ($50) ribbons. Contact Pegasus at 1-203-356-9504 for further information.
Also, contact Pegasus at the same number on the day of the show to find out if inclement weather has postponed the event.
