Prepare To Celebrate

‘El Dia De Los Ninos’

DANBURY — The Girls Scouts Council of Southwestern Connecticut, the Danbury Children First Initiative, the Hispanic Center of Greater Danbury, the Greater Danbury Coalition for a Community United, and the Ecuadorian Civic Center of Danbury invite the community to celebrate, for the first time in Connecticut, a holiday that has been observed in many cities nationwide since April 30, 1998: “El Dia de los Ninos (The Day of the Children): Celebrating Young Americans.”

The traditional Latin American holiday is a day for parents, families, and communities to value and uplift children of all cultures in the United States. Cities throughout the US have committed to creating parades, book festivals, health fairs, or other special events that promote the well-being of children. Community leaders join the celebration by making public commitments to children. The celebration provides a means for families and the larger society to communicate and become aware of the status of children. It also empowers the community to act on behalf of its children throughout the year.

The Danbury celebration will take place on Saturday, April 28, from 1 to 4 pm at Danbury CityCenter Green. It will include information for parents, ethnic performances by Danbury area children and youth, stories for children by renowned storyteller Rauf Mama, free giveaways, and fun activities for children on the Green.

Food will not be sold at the event so that people attending can take advantage of the wide variety of restaurants available in the downtown Danbury area.

The rain date for “El Dia de los Ninos” is Saturday, May 5, also at CityCenter Green. The Green is in the arts and entertainment district of Danbury, surrounded by Ives Street and Patriot Drive. Call 797-8088 or 800-882-5561 for additional information.
