NEW YORK CITY â âMartin Kippenberger: The Invitation and Posters 1977â1997â is on view through December 21 at Dickinson Roundell Inc.
Ten years after Kippenbergerâs death, Dickinson Roundell presents the first ever retrospective exhibition of Kippenbergerâs invitation and posters. The invitations and posters formed an integral part of Kippenbergerâs body of work, accompanying almost every exhibition the artist held during his lifetime.
This collection, the largest of its kind, has never before been shown publicly. Encompassing 168 posters and 175 invitation cards, this exhibition offers an overview of the various periods of the German artistâs work, from the beginning of his career in 1977 to his death in 1997.
Kippenberger was adamant about how important it was to him to make his work known to as wide an audience as possible. Because of this he was keen to experiment with other non-fine art specific channels such as posters, invitation cards, books and performances.
Very much an artistâs artist, Kippenberger had many of his posters designed by artists and friends such as Jeff Koons, Christopher Wool, Lawrence Weiner, Rosemary Trockel, Franz West and Cosima von Bonin.
In the wake of Kippenbergerâs most recent major retrospective at the Tate Modern in 2006 and in anticipation of its arrival MoMA and MOCA Los Angeles, this current exhibition at Dickinsonâs New York space will further expand the understanding of the artistâs extensive oeuvre.
Dickinson Roundell Inc is at 19 East 66th Street. For information, 212-772-8083 or simondickinson.com.
