Remembering Josephine Holcombe
Residents are reminded that Newtown Forest Association (NFA) will host a memorial garden celebration this weekend to honor Josephine Holcombe, whose donation of buildings and other assets established The Holcombe Memorial Preserve and serves as the headquarters for NFA.
Located at 55 Great Hill Road, the preserve today includes the house where Josephine and husband William, a Newtown First Selectman during the 1940s, used to live. After her passing in 1997, Mrs Holcombe left her 89-acre property and the primary residence to NFA.
In addition to that gift, Mrs Holcombe had previously donated 14 acres of land in 1966 and then another 62 acres in 1987, which are collectively referred to as the Holcombe Memorial Trail.
âNFA Remembers Mrs Holcombe: Memorial Garden Dedicationâ will take place on Saturday, September 22, from 4 to 6 pm. The public is invited to join NFA members for a dedication of memorial garden named for Mrs Holcombe. In the event of rain the ceremony will be postponed to Sunday, September 23, at 4 pm.
