Horses Are Personal Property,
Tax Assessor Says
Tax Assessor Denise Hames announced that all personal property owners must file Personal Property Declarations every October 1 to November 1.
The reporting of horses as personal property falls under this prescribed form (M-15).
All horses owned, leased or boarded in Newtown are to be reported by November 1 in order to qualify for the $1,000 per horse exemption available to them. Failure to file within the time limit prescribed shall be considered a waiver of the right to such exemption.
The tax assessorâs office has made several attempts to add all horse owners, but those who do not receive a personal property declaration are asked to stop by the office. If your horse is added to the personal property list because you have neglected to file, it will be assessed with a 25 percent penalty and will not be entitled to any exemptions.
