Forum At NHS

On Drugs And Youth

Newtown Youth Services will present a panel forum on “Drugs: Kids at risk – What Parents Should Know,” October 28, in the Newtown High School lecture hall. The impetus for this program is the result of several requests made by parents for an informative workshop on substance abuse.

Can you answer the following questions? What is the most commonly used drug in the United States? Which drug is associated with the most teenage deaths? Chocolate and marijuana stimulate the same receptors in the brain. How much chocolate would you have to eat to get the same effect as one joint? Do you know what “huffing” is? Cigarette smoke contains about 4,000 chemicals. True of false? Ever hear of a “speedball”?

A panel of experts will answer these and many other questions. Participants in the forum are William Begg, MD, Danbury Hospital ER; Judy Blanchard, health coordinator for the Newtown School District; Theresa Federici, Middle School social worker; John Hamilton, vice president of Liberation Programs; Georgia Hynes, Cornerstone of Eagle Hill; Judith Nickse, Attorney at Law; Debbie Richardson, director of Newtown Youth Services; Carol Skoias, student assistance counselor at Newtown High School; and Sgt Chris Vanghele, Newtown Police Department.

Call Newtown Youth Services at 270-4335 to register for this informative workshop.

One more question. Do you know who comprise the largest number of new smokers and their average age?
