In 2003, Ms York performed The Loves of Shakespeareâs Women at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in London. Michael Billington of The Guardian called the evening âas vivid a solo show as I have seen in some time,â and Daily Mail wrote, âSusannah York is giving a master class in Shakespeareâs women, revealing their souls in a selection of great speeches from all the major plays. She remains as vital, intelligent and attractive an actress as she was more than 20 years ago.â
The Loves of Shakespeareâs Women, conceived and adapted by Ms York, was inspired by John Geilgudâs solo show The Ages of Man. Familiar themes emerged when she delved into Shakespeareâs canon. She began to see a uniting thread in these womenâs lives.
âI suddenly saw that love itself strings all these women together, from Juliet to Mistress Ford, Viola to Constance, Isabella to Gertrude, and from Portia to Cleopatra. Love in its many natures and objects,â said Ms York. âYes, love is what strings these women on a single thread. Therefore, in The Loves of Shakespeareâs Women, I attempt to evoke these aspects of love as only he could express them.
âThe pieces I have chosen to enact are each in their own ways beautiful, stunning or tragic. My goal is to reclaim the genius of Shakespeareâs words for a new generation of theatergoers.â
Following each performance, Ms York will autograph copies of a companion book to the show.
The performance schedule for The Loves of Shakespeareâs Women is Thursday through Saturday at 8 pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 3 pm. There will be a special performance and audience âtalk-backâ discussion on Wednesday, January 26, at 7:30 pm.
