Kennedy Cuomo At Speaking Of Women Luncheon

TRUMBULL — Profiles of women who have courageously fought for human rights will be the focus of comments by human rights activist and author Kerry Kennedy Cuomo on Friday, September 28, at 11:30 am at the Trumbull Marriott.

Ms Kennedy Cuomo is the keynote speaker for the Fourth Annual Speaking of Woman Luncheon, which benefits The Center for Women and Families of Eastern Fairfield County and the WB11 Care For Kids Fund, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation.

Ms Kennedy Cuomo began her human rights career in 1981, when she investigated abuses committed by US immigration officials against refugees from El Salvador. Since then she has led more than 40 human rights delegations to more than 30 countries.

She is the founder of the RFK Center for Human Rights to ensure the protection of rights codified under the UN Declaration of Human Rights and serves on the board of directors of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial, a nonprofit organization addressing the problems of social justice in the spirit of her late father. She is also the chair of the Amnesty International Leadership Council and serves on various advisory committees and boards.

Ms Kennedy Cuomo’s comments will be based on the book Speak Truth to Power: Human Rights Defenders Who Are Changing Our World, which features interviews with and photos of both famous and less well-known activists, including Helen Prejean, Marian Wright Edelman, and the Dalai Lama. The book which has already been the basis for an exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC; a theatrical presentation; a PBS television program; a record album; and educational CD-ROM and website, will be available for purchase and autographing immediately following the luncheon.

The event is a major fundraiser for the women and families center’s program on behalf of victims of domestic violence or sexual assault, as well as women newly released from prison. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the WB11 Care for Kids Fund, allowing it to support organizations like The Center and others.

A minimum donation of $100 is expected of each guest. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Call The Center for Woman and Families at 203-334-6154 for reservations.
