Programs For Parents

POSITIVE PARENTING PROGRAMS – We are now taking names for the next sessions, both morning and evening.  Also, if you would like to host a five-week group in your home, a staff member would be happy to arrange this with you.  This is a great way for neighbors to get to know one another.  Any questions, please call Roseanne Loring at 270-4335

TIPS TO FACILIATATE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN HOME AND SCHOOL with Lori Wilson.  This workshop will be presented on Thursday, October 20 at 7:30 pm.  Free.

DRUGS:  KIDS AT RISK – WHAT PARENTS SHOULD KNOW – Thursday, October 28 at 7 pm In The Newtown High School Lecture Hall. This will be a panel format with the emphasis on questions and answers.  Presenters include Bill Begg, MD, Danbury Hospital ER, Judy Blanchard, health coordinator, Newtown School System, Theresa Federici, NMS Social Worker, John Hamilton, Liberation Programs, Georgia Hynes, Cornerstone at Eagle Hill, Judith Nickse, attorney, Debbie Richardson, director, Newtown Youth Services, Carol Skolas, student assitance counselor, NHS and Sgt. Chris Vanghele, Newtown Police Dept.  There is no charge for this forum.

ADOLESCENTS:  WHEN DO YOU KNOW WHEN THEY’VE CROSSED THE LINE with John Gelinas, MD on Wednesday, November 3 at 7:30 pm.  Free.

Community Programs

A HALLOWEEN FAIR on Saturday, October 30 from 1-4 pm sponsored by the high school Youth Advisory Board.  They are asking for a donation admission and fees for games.  They money raised will support their annual scholarship.

The YAB is also sponsoring a TAG SALE on November 13, in the Memorial Room of the Congregational Church House at 41A Main Street.  Anyone wishing to make donations can call NYS at 270-4335.  Donations may be dropped off on Friday, November 12 between 2:30 and 6:30 pm or after 8 am on Saturday.  (Only items ready for sale, please.)  All proceeds will be used for the YAB annual scholarship fund.,

NEWTOWN FRIENDS OF MUSIC – Sunday, October 31 at 3 pm, Edmund Town Hall.  Student vouchers available at the Youth Services office.

The above programs (except those noted) will be held at Newtown Youth Services.

Super Sitter Babysitting Program

Due to conflicts with Middle School early dismissals the November Accelerated Super Sitter course will be postponed until December – dates to follow!

Youth Group Meetings

The High School Youth Advisory Board (YAB) will meet on Monday, October 25, at 6:30 pm at Youth Services. Anyone interested in joining, please call the office or see Erin Lewis or Jessica Tendler at NHS.

NYCAAP meets every week alternating Mondays and Tuesdays at 5:30 pm.  The next meeting is Tuesday, October 25 at NYS.  Call the office or see Jessica Clark or Katie Hayes for details.

The Middle School Youth Advisory Board meets on October 26 at NYS.  Call the office or see Jessica Clark or Katie Hayes for details.

Attention Teens

The Newtown Youth Services’ Job Bank matches Newtown residents with teens who are in search of part-time employment such as babysitting, yard work, or various odd jobs.  Some positions are part time and others are on-going.

If you are between 13 and 18 and are interested in joining the Job Bank, please call the Job Bank Coordinator, Jessica Clark, at 270-4335.  Applications may be picked up at the office between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm or call the office and we’ll mail you one.

Entertainment Books

Once again, NYS makes these handy books available at $30 each. They make great gifts, discounts for area restaurants, videos, movie tickets, dry cleaning, etc.  It’s a great way to support Newtown Youth Service.  Please call 270-4335 to reserve your copy.

The General Store on Main Street was constructed in 1847 by David Johnson and was extensively rebuilt in the late 1860’s. It has changed little since then.

Newtown Savings Bank was founded in 1855 and originally was located in the northern half of the building on the corner of West Street at the flagpole.
