I think my legs are getting stronger. With all of the rain we’ve been having, I find that when I walk across a field I sink a little bit into the sodden earth. It’s kind of like trying to walk fast in sand or snow – even a little bit of resistance sure builds the muscles up! Too bad I didn’t know about this before June’s Rooster Run. I would have liked my chances.

Speaking about sinking into the mud, I’ve noticed that a lot of street signs around town appear to be shorter than they used to be.

This sign at the intersection of Mile Hill Road and Queen Street is a case in point. I’ve also noticed the sign for Point O’ Rocks Road at its intersection with Brushy Hill seems suspiciously sunken. Now, I’m not suggesting that with all the rain we’ve been having signs are beginning to sink into the ground, but it does seem like quite a coincidence, doesn’t it?

The mud in the fields is really good for tracking footprints, however, which is good for me because I’m on the hunt for the Newtown Bobcat. Now this flighty feline has been seen all around town, from Currituck Road up to Botsford, where a Bee reporter thought he sighted it sometime back, behind Stop and Shop. Last week, Carlin Zeno spotted the cat in his backyard, and this week, Barbara Urbanski added her name to a growing list of Bobcat spotters

Barbara was looking out into her backyard on Head O’ Meadow road when she noticed a wild turkey turn frantic as it approached a stone wall. Moments after the turkey’s hurried flight, she says a bobcat emerged from behind the stone structure and walked across her yard. She described it has much larger than a cat (this makes me nervous) and possessing a hooked tail. Unfortunately, by the time she grabbed her camera, the shy creature was long gone. Now with two sightings in two weeks in the area around Boggs Hill Road, I think I can narrow my search. I implore all of you, however: If you see it, get a picture!

There no doubt were some good photo opportunities in Stamford Wednesday night, as Democratic Town Committee Chairman Earl J. Smith and First Selectman Herb Rosenthal were invited to attend Wednesday’s Gore/Lieberman rally at Stamford’s Italian American Club. Next week, Newtown resident Bradford Greene will head to the National Democratic Convention in Los Angeles as a Connecticut delegate. Mr Greene had originally been a supporter of Bill Bradley but will arrive in LA to cast his vote for Gore.

The Gore/Lieberman ticket sure has some people talking, mostly about Sen Lieberman. People are also talking about the whereabouts of the Family Tambascio. I heard that a Bee reporter was busy working on a story about Sen Lieberman, and in trying to track down information about a Lieberman visit to My Place Restaurant a few years ago attempted to contact Louise Tambascio, the restaurant co-owner, for an exact date. Louise wasn’t around, and neither, it seems, were her two sons, Mark and John. The hard working Tombascios seemed to be unaccounted for during a few days this week. I hope they were getting a few days of well-deserved relaxation.

I certainly hope that Dan and Mary Beth Scheid will be all right in their new Michigan home. After 16 years in Newtown, not counting a three-year outposting to Italy, Dan and Mary Beth are leaving this week for Midland, Michigan. Dan, a vice president with Union Carbide Corporation in Danbury, will be working at the headquarters of the Dow Chemical Company, which bought Carbide about a year ago.

About two weeks ago, David Foss borrowed a pair of socks from Sandy Tannone, and this week his mother, Carol, came by The Bee to return them. David was invited to be an usher at the wedding of Sandy’s son, John, but the day of the ceremony he showed up with his tuxedo and brown socks, evoking a lot of teasing from the bridal party. It was too late, and too far, for him to go home for a pair of black socks, so Sandy hunted through her bureau and came up with one pair – women’s fuzzy orlon knee socks – for David to wear.

Congratulations to Newtown’s talented 11-year-old all-stars who last week captured the Cal Ripken state title with a 5-4 win over South Meriden in South Meriden. The team is made up mostly of players from last year’s 10-year-old state championship team so their success comes as little surprise. The boys and their coaches and parents are headed to Keene, New Hampshire, this weekend for the New England Regionals. I plan to make my way up there if the team makes it to the finals.

Keeping on that sports track, congratulations are also in order for Brian Leavitt, who reports that he made it through 15 innings of last week’s 19 inning game between the Red Sox and the Mariners. The game, the longest in several years, was played out in Seattle and didn’t end until 3:45 am Eastern Standard Time.

Schools Transportation Director Mary Kelly is sleeping a little easier this week after finally completing the annual school bus routes. They can be found in this week’s “Back to School” section. The yearly project is no easy task, especially as Newtown continues to gain more and more roads. According to Fred Hurley, Newtown gains as much as 8-9 miles of roads each year thanks to all the new development.

The arrival of this week’s “Back to School” section reminds me that summer is rapidly coming to an end. The good news is we are that much closer to the annual Labor Day Parade. Of course, the bad news is fall is not that far off and we all know what comes after fall.

Bob Cascella said this week he may make another run at the first selectman’s seat, and while he may not receive the endorsement of the Republican Party, Bob confirmed this week that he has received the endorsement of his wife, Sue.

Speaking of another run, I think I’m going to head out and see what these new, stronger legs can do. Sprint on back here next week and…

Read me again.
