Benjamin March of Sandy Hook was selected recently for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. The Society only invites those students who have superior academic achievement and are among the top scholars in the nation. He is a student at Newtown High School.

Lori Meehan, Lillian Campbell, and Kellie Datin recently participated in Susquehanna University’s Advanced Writer’s workshop in Selinsgrove, Penn. The program, designed for experienced student writers in 11th and 12th grade, took place from June 27 to July 3.

Thomas W Malloy received a Bachelor of Science degree from Babson College in Wellesley, Mass in May 2004.

Kaitlyn Mitchell, daughter of Dr Kevin and Laura Mitchell, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. during a commencement ceremony on May 16.

Alexis Nahoum received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English during May commencement ceremonies at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vt.

Cassie Elizabeth Shewmaker, daughter of former Newtown residents David and Leah Shewmaker of Flower Mound, Texas, graduated Magna Cum Laude from the College of William and Mary in Washington, D.C. with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. She was a member of the Omicron Delta Epsilon economics honor society. Cassie, a 2000 graduate of Newtown High School, is working as a consultant with Grant Thornton in Alexandria, Va.

Christopher J. Carolan, son of Kevin and Dorothy Carolan of Sandy Hook, received Dean’s List honors for the spring 2004 semester from Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt. Christopher is a business administration major.

Erin Carolan, daughter of Kevin and Dorothy Carolan of Sandy Hook, Erin Hughes of Sandy Hook, and Jennifer Dahlgard received Dean’s List honors for the spring 2004 semester from Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I.

Gary E Jeanfaivre, son of Kathleen and Michael Colangelo of Sandy Hook, received Dean’s List honors for the spring 2004 semester from Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt. He is majoring in Journalism.

Jennifer Beth Dorenbosch was named to the spring 2004 Dean’s List for Drew University in Madison, N.J.

The following students received Dean’s List honors for the spring 2004 semester from Western Connecticut State University in Danbury: Jayme Bechkham, Nancy Belanger, Kyle Coney, Roger Connor, Jr, Melissa Fornabia, Jeffrey Gasparini, Richard Grant, Daniel Gualo, Faith Hunt, Vincent Laurence, Laura McNamara, Keira Morin, Laura Nossal, Colin Robertson, Forest Robertson, Bonnie Seidel, Monica Sievel, Annette Wieczorek, Doriana Zoto, all of Newtown, Laura Bobel, Jessica Cappiello, Philomena Conti, Megan Gagliardi, Andrea Guertin, Jonathan Mayhew, Maria Pavelo, Nicholas Rogers, Josh Tamarkin, Christopher Towne, Amy Treadwell, and Jessica Ward, all of Sandy Hook.

Carolyn Cruson, vice chairperson of cub-scout leader training in the Scatacook district, received the District Award of Merit from the Connecticut Yankee Council of Boy Scouts of America’s Annual Council Recognition Dinner at Amarante’s Restaurant in East Haven on June 16.
