Desmond-Fish Library Presents ‘Native Americans & Civil Rights in New York,’ Jan. 14

Ak/gs set 1-3; #683111

GARRISON, N.Y. — On Sunday, January 14, at 6:30 pm, the Desmond-Fish Library will hold its annual adult program, “Bringing the Dream Home: Civil Rights and the Hudson Valley.”

This year’s program explores the vibrant but little known Native American communities in the area — some visible, some underground — with their ancient understanding of the local landscape, their rich heritage including Algonquin teachings about tolerance and peacemaking which influenced Thoreau and Martin Luther King, the African and Dutch bloodlines they share with other residents here and the civil rights issues they continue to face today.

Join Evan Pritchard, an Algonquin (Micmac) descendant who is a Marist College professor and author of many books including Native New Yorkers: The Legacy of the Algonquin People of New York, and representatives of contemporary Native American communities in the area, for a potluck supper and speaker’s program on history and contemporary reality of Native Americans in the New York area.

The event is free; bringing food to share is welcome and optional. The Alice Curtis Desmond and Hamilton Fish Library is at Routes 403 and 9D. For further information, www.dfl.highlands.com or 845-424-3020.
