Wilcox, VosWinkel Sign To Play In College

Newtown High School baseball player Kyle Wilcox and lacrosse player Kaitlyn VosWinkel signed National Letters of Intent to play their sports in college this past week.

Wilcox signed to play at Bryant University in Smithfield, RI, and VosWinkel signed to continue her athletics career at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.

Wilcox, a pitcher, beat the top-ranked team in the state, Pomperaug of Southbury, last year, by throwing a complete game with 25 batters faced. He allowed only three hits and no runs in the win. Wilcox finished the season with a 1.63 earned run average, opponents only hit .193 against him, and he had 25 strikeouts in 30 innings.

“Kyle is all you can ask out of a student athlete at Newtown High School, he is an extremely hardworking individual, a competitor and leader on the field. He is an extremely fun kid to coach and will be a huge part of our success this coming season,” Newtown Coach Matt Memoli said.

VosWinkel, a defender on the lacrosse team, helped Newtown to 13-0 South-West Conference record, and an 18-3 overall mark as the Nighthawks won their seventh straight conference title. VosWinkel earned First Team All State honors in her junior year. She was selected to the US Lacrosse Lower New England Team and honored as part of the Connecticut Super Juniors last season. VosWinkel also earned All Colonial League accolades.

Maura Fletcher, VosWinkel’s high school coach, called her an “Exceptional defender – quick and aggressive, fearless,” adding that she “was instrumental in our (2011) SWC championship win over Barlow.”
