Newtown Youth Wrestlers Start Season With Two Wins

The Newtown Youth Wrestling Association (NYWA) finished its first week of regular season competitive wrestling with much success. Both the elementary and middle school squads participated in home and away matches against Ridgefield.

The elementary squad match was highlighted by a record 27 wrestlers competing. The team traveled to Ridgefield and won 20 of the 30 matches.

Led by newcomer Robbie Accomando (2-0 with two pins), third grader Justin Bogdanoff (2-0 with two pins) and wins from brothers James and Sean Dauber, the kindergarten through fifth grade squad found itself winning throughout much of the evening.

Newcomer Eva Provey lost a tough 10-8 bout that went back and forth in all three periods, and Owen Perchuck found himself on the winning side of an exciting 9-8 match.

Other winners included Zach Leonard, William Henkel, Luca Manfredi, Zach Robinson, Jordan Conrad, Steven Lueci, Shaine Luzietti, Ben Watson, Evan Rooney, Luke Wellman, Jack Zingaro, Adrian Decola, Nate Gibson, and Gren Paynter.

The middle school team fared equally well as it came away with an 18-6 win over the older Ridgefield team at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

First-year wrestler and Newtown Middle School seventh grader Jack Wellman earned a win.

Sean Arnold, Andrew Hubina, and Edward Lovely all went 2-0 with two pins. Joining them in multiple victories against the black and orange were Erik Benson (2-0), Thomas Leuci (2-1), Chris Manfredi (2-0), and Andrei Steinjann (2-1). Anthony Falbo, Chris Lajoie, and Alex Stavola had a win each.

The NYWA holds it’s practice sessions Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 6-8 pm for the middle school squad, in the Sandy Hook gym, and 6:30 to 8 pm for the elementary school squad, in the Sandy Hook cafeteria.

Thursday nights are competition nights.
