Gardening In A Cold (Mediterranean) Climate—

Tour Spanish And Italian Gardens

With Patricia Carr

As the growing season wanes, there is still time to get a gardening fix at C.H. Booth Library.

A special slide show and talk on the gardens of southern Europe will be presented on Thursday, September 29, at 7:30 pm, in the library’s first floor meeting room.

Patricia Carr will show pictures of Spanish historical gardens such as the Generalife in Granada (at the Alhambra), and El Alcazar in Seville. In Italy, she will focus on Villa D’Este, Villa Lante, and the Bomarzo Gardens. She will also show examples of modern Mediterranean gardens while discussing the shared horticultural challenges found in both locales –– southern Europe and southern New England.

“There are similarities, such as harsh climate and lack of water. In Spain or Italy, the response is typically one of great simplicity producing stunning effects,” Ms Carr writes.

Her slides offer beautiful and inspiring views that she feels “will help people achieve elegance and style in their own gardens with a minimum of effort.”

Bridgewater librarian Sandy Neary offers the following comments in praise of Patricia Carr lectures.

“She is a witty and captivating speaker … and her research about her subject is impeccable. Once someone has attended one of Patricia’s programs, they will not miss another.”

Patricia Carr was educated in England, has traveled widely, and has taught courses in literature, history, and fine arts. She has lectured at schools, universities, hospitals, and a variety of organizations. She is presently working at the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington.
