Wild geese are flying south. In the night, I heard a flock going over. They were quite low - perhaps planning to land on our nearby pond, to rest.

It reminded me of the book my friend Joy Yates loaned me a couple weeks ago. It is a beautiful book, Father Goose, that tells about their flight south, which was planned and undertaken by a human being who had a dream. Weâve probably all seen the movie that recorded the miracle trip. The book has beautiful illustrations and would make a wonderful Christmas gift for a nature lover.
In late September three Newtown women, members of the Yankeemaid chorus, were in Orlando, Florida. Cindy Heller, Colleen McMorran, and Pat Parrott took part in the chorusâ appearance at the International Sweet Adeline competition. The area group was 18th out of 28 regional winners. The Yankeemaids meet every Wednesday night at St Josephâs Manor in Trumbull. Rehearsals have begun for their holiday show, December 2, and they would like to welcome any new members. Show up on Wednesday night and ask for Pat Parrott.
A recent issue of Natural New England, a fairly new magazine with headquarters in South Portland, Me., had an article about Connecticutâs license plates which benefit Long Island Sound projects. The blue and white plates for the Save the Sound projects picture a lighthouse and cost $50. Of that, $35 goes toward the Long Island Sound Fund.
To date, over 100,000 such plates have been sold, yielding the net amount of three and a half million dollars. It shows that residents of our state have great concern for environmental needs.
Projects this year have included a fish ladder being constructed at Pond Lilly Dam, by the New Haven Land Trust. An Audubon project to create a nature trail at the Guilford Salt Meadows sanctuary is another grant recipient.
Seasons are changing. Now is the time to think about changing the time on the clocks, microwave, car dashboard, wristwatch, and VCR. And anything else that has a timekeeper. It is the time to light the candle in the carved-out pumpkin â buy a basket of apples at a nearby orchard and make applesauce.
It also is time to get the stockpot going and make a new kind of hearty soup. It is time to rake the leaves andâ¦
Some need to install their storm windows and it is time to check the car radiator and supply of anti-freeze and put on the snow tires if you use them!
This morningâs 26 degrees on the thermometer told me when I first got up that the bird water would be iced over. It was. After awhile, the bluejay decided he needed a drink and he deliberately pecked a hole in the ice and drank several times. By mid-morning the sun had melted the ice and all the birds were there to drink.
Words of Edna St Vincent Millay closed the column last week. They were from a poem, âFirst Fig,â written in 1920.
Who said âNo one can make you feel inferior without your consentâ?
