The Spirit of the Game
The Spirit of the Game
To the Editor:
In a world that seems to be spinning out of control, I was fortunate enough to witness something extraordinary. On March 7, I attended the semifinals of the Newtown Girlsâ Basketball Team, the Nighthawks. The game was at the Reed Intermediate School, the level of enthusiasm was high. The girls played a great game, they won, but they did something exceptional at that game.
Every child is an individual, making us uniquely who we are. One of the little girls is special and a joy to watch. As tensions mounted, one girl had a clear shot to the basket, instead she turned and threw it to her teammate. This special girl caught it and threw it to the basket, it went in. The gym went wild and a young girl accomplished what dreams are made of.
Congratulations girls; you are everything good and wonderful in our world today. I hope youâll always carry that giving spirit in your hearts. To the managers, Tammy Marks and Mr Hadgraft, you did a fine job, it was an honor and pleasure to shake your hand. To all the girls, keep that awesome spirit and to the parents, hooray on raising such caring and giving children. It warmed my heart and brought tears to my eyes knowing that people can make a difference.
They didnât win the championship but Iâm sure, like myself, they made the right choice and were winners on that magical night.
Hooray for all the volunteers in Newtown, you make a difference in our lives everyday. Thank you for your generous spirit and time.
