George E. Schleiter

A Pillar Of Strength For Friends And Family

George E. Schleiter, 91, of Heritage Village, died July 6, at Danbury Hospital. He was the widower of Helen D. Schleiter. Mr Schleiter was born April 2, 1920, in New York City, son of Theresia (Albrecht) and Jerry Schleiter.

He leaves one son, Dr Gary Schleiter, and his wife Dr Maria Lagana, of Newtown; one daughter, Gail Schleiter of New York City; a sister; and two nieces.

He was a US Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Signal Corps, and a graduate of Hofstra University on Long Island. He retired as a systems analyst for New York Telephone, where he had worked for more than 30 years. He served as a volunteer and driver with the Heritage Village Ambulance Association, was a member of the Heritage Village Woodworking Club, and with the Last Thursday of the Month Luncheon Club. For many years he volunteered for the Southbury Food Bank. Mr Schleiter was a member of the Masons, Lynbrook-Massapequa Lodge 822.

He will always be remembered by those who knew him as a man of incisive intelligence, and quiet compassion. He was always a builder, a maker of things, an artisan, an organizer, and a pillar of strength.

A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced. Arrangements are by Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Heritage Village Ambulance Association, PO Box 2045, Southbury CT 06488, and to the Emergency Food Aid In Southbury, Inc, Southbury Training School Thrift Shop Annex, Route 172, Southbury CT 06488.
