President Obama has ordered that all American flags be lowered to honor the victims of this morning’s shootings at the Washington Navy Yard.

A shooting took place at Navy command complex in Washington, D.C., Monday morning has reportedly left 13 people dead including one gunman.

The President has issued a proclamation ordering flags lowered until sunset Friday, September 20. 

Issued this afternoon, the proclamation, “Honoring the Victims of the Tragedy at The Washington Navy Yard,” reads in part:

“As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on September 16, 2013, at the Washington Navy Yard, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States  … I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, September 20, 2013. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”

Governor Dannel P. Malloy, in response to the proclamation issued by President Obama, has directed all US and state flags in Connecticut to fly at half-staff until sunset on September 20, 2013 in honor of the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated today at the Washington Navy Yard.

“Our hearts go out to everyone who was affected by this morning’s shooting at the Washington Navy Yard,” said Gov Malloy. “On behalf of the people of Connecticut, we offer our deepest condolences and will keep the victims of this senseless tragedy in our thoughts and prayers.”
