KATHARINA RICH PERLOW ‘WORKS ON PAPER’

ak/gs set 2/6 #728061

NEW YORK CITY — The Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery is showing “Works on Paper: 1930s to the Present.” It is the gallery’s first such exhibit including most of the gallery’s artists and some known artists whose works on paper are often not seen. The images on paper include a wide range of mediums such as watercolor, gouache, monotypes, silkscreens, oils, acrylics, pen and pencil, Conte crayon and woodcuts it will be on view until March 4.

Artists represented in the show are: Raymond Hendler (1923–1998) whose career started with the GI Bill in Paris in 1951, where he was first introduced to Surrealism. After his return to the United States, living and painting on Long Island, there is a definite reminder in his work of Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock. Whether the palette has bright colors or shades of black, white and gray the works retain a whimsical quality.

Claire Klarewicz-Okser’s works on paper are painted in her realistic, yet stylized manner. Although richly painted clothing and props are usually taken from the 1930s, the figures shown prominently in Okser’s gouache paintings are more concerned with human emotions, than specific times or events.

Jean Helion is represented with an unusual surreal watercolor and ink piece from 1938; Joellyn Duesberry’s monotypes will represent the artist in this show; William Clutz’s pastels and John Ferren’s early and late work as well as Robert Goodnough, John Grillo, Sally Michel, Stephen Pace, James Kelly and Jacob Kainen are well represented in this exhibition.

Steven Katz’s Conte crayon drawings, and more recent work by Tom Ferrara, Richard Segalman, Harold Gregor and Karl Hagedorn contribute to make this an exciting show.

The Katharina Rich Perlow gallery is at 41 East 57th Street. For more information, 212-644-7171.
