Music Workshop To Celebrate With Return Of Youth Open Mic
The Music Workshop will celebrate the one-year anniversary of its new teaching location at Newtown Congregational Church with the return of Saturday Night Youth Open Mic on September 27. Open mic events take place in The Great Room of the church, 14 West Street.
“Students of Newtown High School Tech Club will video the open mic for airing on the high school’s Channel 17 on Charter Cable,” says Workshop Director and teacher Jim Allyn.
“The Workshop’s new location in the Music Room here at the church has enabled the creation of events for both my students and the larger community to take part in, and for that I am most grateful,” Mr Allyn continued. “This will be our seventh Youth Open Mic since we began, and the response has been very enthusiastic.”
In addition to youth Open Mics in September and October, Mr Allyn is producing a special WPKN radio presentation which will broadcast live on November 23 from the same location, to highlight the work of Sandy Hook Promise. Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary), members of Flagpole Radio Cafe Band, poet Martin Espada, and guest speakers will join Newtown Youth Voices for the 90-minute broadcast.
Newtown Youth Voices, whose song “My Beautiful Town” has benefited Sandy Hook Promise, is also currently recording a new piece at the Music Workshop called “We’re Not Waiting,” which they will perform at a special United Nations youth leadership conference on November 17. The song will ultimately include the voices of young singers and choirs from across America and the world.
Proceeds from sales will benefit causes helping children internationally and in the United States.
