CONCORD, N.H. â The New Hampshire Historical Society will present âFranklin Pierce, Race and Slavery,â a lecture by Dr Douglas A. Ley, associate professor of history at Franklin Pierce College, on Sunday, January 16 at 2 pm. The lecture will be held at the societyâs Tuck Library.
The program will explore the explosive issues of race and slavery that faced President Franklin Pierce and continue to shape race relations in America today. From the Fugitive Slave Act to Bleeding Kansas, the lecture will examine Franklin Pierce and his generationâs beliefs and actions as well as how they laid the groundwork for many of the challenges that Dr Martin Luther King Jr faced during the Twentieth Century. The discussion will also explore what an understanding of Franklin Pierce and his times can teach present day Americans about how issues related to race are currently perceived.
