Four Injured In Chain Reaction Crash On I-84
(with photo)
A chain-reaction accident involving two trucks and an auto on westbound
Interstate-84 west of Exit 10 injured four people and backed up traffic to
Southbury for several hours Tuesday afternoon.
Westbound motorists trying to avoid the backups exited westbound I-84 onto
local roads causing extended traffic tie-ups there. On eastbound I-84, another
traffic jam formed when motorists slowed down to look at the accident in the
westbound lanes.
State police said tractor-trailer truck driver Tomasz Dziubanski, 31, of New
Britain, was driving westbound and then looked down at some paperwork for his
next delivery just before driving into the rear end of a westbound 1999 GMC
truck driven by Donald B. Jones, 50, of Chelmsford, Mass.
Donald Jones, and two passengers in the GMC truck, Maryann Jones, 50, and
Joanna Jones, 21, struck their heads on the rear window of that truck, state
police said.
The impact forced the GMC truck into the rear end of a westbound 1982 Datsun
210 driven by Andrea J. Flammia, 31, of Waterbury, state police said. Ms
Flammia reported neck pain, state police said.
Dziubanski reported no injuries.
Ambulance crews from Newtown, Bethel and Stony Hill transported the injured to
Danbury Hospital where all were treated and released. Newtown Hook and Ladder
firefighters went to the accident scene.
State police attributed the accident to inattentiveness on the part of Mr
Dziubanski and issued him an infractions ticket for traveling too fast.
