NEW YORK CITY -- Buyers lined up once again to get the first chance to buy at
Metropolitan's third Vintage Fashion and Antique Textile Show of 1999. The
event attracted hundreds of buyers including designers, stylists, museum
curators, dealers and collectors who were seeking out inspiration and items
for their personal collections. Designers from Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Jill
Stuart, Vivienne Tam and other New York fashion houses were among those
attending.
The event hosted 38 dealers selling antique clothing, textiles, and
accessories from the 1800s-1970s. Dresses, suits, coats, shoes, hats,
handbags, eyewear, swimwear, men's wear and accessories, lingerie, as well as
brocades, jacquards, embroidery, laces, quilts, books and prints were offered
at the three-day event. Designer pieces included Cardin, Chanel, Courreges,
Dior, Fortuny, Gernreich, Gucci, Halston, Hermes, McCardell, Norell, Pucci,
Quaint, St Lauren and Valentino. Dealers displayed offbeat, elegant and
eccentric clothing and accessories including Victorian and Edwardian gowns and
walking suits; Asian garments and textiles including kimono and shibori
scarves; vintage swimwear from early wool jersey suits to tropical and sexy
60s and 70s bikinis; designer hats and suits from the 1920s-1950s; vintage
handbags; outrageous couture; bias-cut gowns and even sexy vintage lingerie
such as corsets and slips.
Dealers exhibiting included Suzi's Antiques of Farmville, Va.; Antique Textile
Resource of Bethesda, Md.; Barbara Q. Kennedy, Sinking Spring, Pa.; Hollywood
& Vine Co, Pound Ridge, N.Y.; as well as new exhibitors including Odds of New
York City.
